HISTORY OF THE MAGALE MANSION
Nestled in the heart of Magnolia, Arkansas, the Magale Mansion has stood as a symbol of Southern charm and architectural beauty for over 130 years. Originally built in 1893 by attorney Joseph Magale and his wife Mary (Mollie) Boreing Magale, the stately home just off the beautiful Magnolia square at 423 N. Jefferson is one of Magnolia’s most iconic and architecturally significant residences. Originally a two-story Victorian-style structure complete with a third-floor observatory, it was the family home of Joseph, Molly, and their two children, John and Lillian.
Joseph Magale was a Roman Catholic. It wasn’t until after he died that his wife, Mollie converted. There was no Catholic church in Magnolia at the time, but with the
influx of people during the oil boom in the late 1930s, a congregation formed. A priest would come from Texarkana once a month and Catholic Mass was held in the Magale House for several years until they built their first church on Smith Street. The current retail space, behind the custom folding French doors, had been used as a music room since it had a grand piano and supposedly an organ in it.
Their son, John Magale (born in 1892, not in the home) was a self-taught geologist, key figure in the development of the Magnolia Oilfield in the 1930s, and the first president of First National Bank. John remodeled the residence between 1939 and 1940. His renovations modernized the structure while preserving its timeless elegance, replacing the original balcony and observatory with the now-iconic columned façade that defines the mansion today.
Mollie and their daughter Lillian Magale Stevenson, continued to reside in the home into the 1960s. Mollie died in 1961 followed by Lillian in 1962. After standing vacant from 1962-1970/71, it briefly served as a rental to Ark (Archie’s son) and Nancy Monroe in the early 1970s. The home found new stewards in March 1977 when Magnolia attorney Mike and wife Betty Epley purchased their beloved family home. Over the next 45 years, the Epley’s raised their family, restored and preserved the property, highlighting its historic character with thoughtful details. The residence boasts eleven majestic rooms, fourteen-foot ceilings, ornate chandeliers, detailed bulls-eye molding, and a sprawling screened porch. The mansion was proudly featured in Magnolia’s Sesquicentennial Historic Home Tour in 1986 as one of the town’s oldest, most celebrated architectural treasures.
In 2022, Susan and John Haynes became the home’s next caretakers, updating the residence and using it as a rental before passing it on to its newest owners, Daniel and Ashley Talley, in November of 2023. Now entering a new era, the Magale Mansion is being reimagined as the future home of Southern Serenity, a destination salon and spa where history, beauty, and hospitality converge. Serenity’s presence in the Magale Mansion is more than a relocation, it’s a revitalization of community, craftsmanship, and care. This iconic home will continue to be a place of transformation and connection, just as it always has been.
